Howard is a partner and registered patent attorney at Sand, Sebolt & Wernow whose practice is limited exclusively to intellectual property law. As an experienced intellectual property attorney, he focuses on USPTO patent preparation and prosecution, trademark counseling, copyright law and related litigation, intellectual property licensing, and technology transfers.
As an IP lawyer, Howard counsels clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to individual entrepreneurs, with a particular emphasis on middle-market companies and research institutions. He helps clients develop strategic patent portfolios and intellectual property portfolios by drafting well-crafted patent applications in areas including weapons and missile systems, propulsion systems, spacecraft electrical networks, laser amplification systems, antenna communication networks, LIDAR sensing systems, semiconductor fabrication, mobile applications, computer software, heavy machinery, and a variety of consumer products.
Howard carefully consults with each client to ensure that their patent applications accurately describe and protect the invention. That attention to detail is critical because patent drafting is highly complex. The United States Supreme Court has recognized that a patent application may constitute “one of the most difficult legal instruments to draw with accuracy.”
Howard takes a practical approach to resolving disputes while recognizing when enforcement or defense of intellectual property rights is necessary. His litigation practice includes patent litigation, trademark disputes and enforcement of intellectual property rights through the United States. He has served as both lead plaintiff’s counsel and lead defense counsel in multiple federal patent litigation matters that resulted in favorable settlements for his clients.
Howard maintains an active international intellectual property practice. He counsels companies around the world on United States patent and trademark law, including clients in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
